What's the difference between SBME, BMES, EMBS? ...

Students of Biomedical Engineering (SBME)
Students of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) is the local student organization at the University of Utah that melds the students of the Bioengineering department to intrinsic resources to aid them in their quests while attending the University of Utah. SBME increases faculty-to-student interaction, fosters relationships among biomedical engineering students, and promotes BMES (see below) membership. In addition, the organization maintains and seeks to improve the bioengineering lounge located in the Merrill Engineering Building. SBME is not BMES or EMBS but provides access to these professional organizations.

Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES)
The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) is a national, professional organization. BMES believes that part of quality education and effective career preparation happens outside the classroom. Professional societies and organizations give one access to lectures, conferences, alumni, events and resources to build engineering skills pertinent to our areas of interest. They also serve to open doors to opportunities in all areas regardless of specialty or career interests. The primary purpose of BMES is to provide opportunities and benefits to members of the organization in the following areas:

  • Professional Benefit: Conferences, publications, speakers, faculty involvement and insight.
  • Communication Benefit: Awareness of, and participation in, activities and opportunities not otherwise available.
  • Community Benefit: Service, outreach, well-rounded future employees.
  • Synergistic Benefit: Network and share resources with other organizations and departments when possible.
  • Social Benefit: Facilitate peer-to-peer interaction and student interaction faculty and staff in a non-classroom environment.

IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS)
The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) is another national, professional organization. EMBS advances the application of engineering sciences and technology to medicine and biology, promotes the profession, and provides global leadership for the benefit of its members and humanity by disseminating knowledge, setting standards, fostering professional development, and recognizing excellence.
