Title
‘Fitness For Use', the center of ePTFE implantable medical product design at Gore
Abstract

In the medical device industry “fitness for use” describes the effectiveness of a medical product to perform its intended use. With advances in ePTFE (expanded-polytetraflouroethylene) processing capabilities and performance characteristics, physicians are continually able to identify new uses for ePTFE. As a technology driven company which focuses on ePTFE products, Gore uses an iterative development process involving the collaboration of physicians with bioengineers, known as Product Specialists, to ensure the products are “fit for use”. The iterative process has produced products including vascular grafts, vascular patches, stent grafts, septal occluders, pericardial membranes and dura substitutes.
