Title
Technology Development Case Study: University of Utah Spins Out State of The Art Catheter Technology
Abstract

This presentation is a case study which intends to demonstrate the potential to take a physician's concept and effectively mature it, to the point where it can be successfully spun out into a medical device company. This case study is based on the Veritract Smart Tube technology. This technology was originally conceived by Dr. John Fang, University of Utah Hospital. The technology was then refined by Dr. Robert Hitchcock and a group of his undergraduate Bioengineering students, via the bioDesign program. The University of Utah's Lassonde Center then developed a business model around the technology. The University's Technology Commercialization Office (TCO) is currently collaborating with outside investors, and a company will soon be spun out.

Since the concept was first conceived in 2007, the technology has received numerous awards.

* University of Utah MicroGrant

* Invented in Utah 2009, 1st Place

* Utah Entrepreneur Challenge, 2nd Place

* Opportunity Quest, 3rd Place

* Utah Concept to Company, Finalist

* Global Moot Corp, Invitee

This is a testament to the strong collaborative efforts of the various university entities, students and faculty.
