Jarmila Janatova

Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Protein chemistry, biocompatibility of biomedical polymers, expression of proteins in hollow fiber bioreactors.

Dr. Janatova's research activities have been: (1) in the area of biochemistry of plasma proteins, predominantly proteins of the complement system, their isolation and characterization by a large variety of techniques, and (2) in the developing of new biochemical preparative and analytical procedures. Her studies have also included (3) proteins and inhibitors from human tear fluid, and (4) the issues, concerning the biocompatibility of biomedical polymers, namely interaction and activation of plasma proteins at the artificial surfaces of blood-contacting biomaterials, and (5) prevention of bacterial adhesion to biomaterials.

Currently, her research activities include (6) production of monoclonal antibodies in hollow fiber bioreactors with serum-free media and purification of monoclonal antibodies utilizing newly developed procedures, (7) separation and isolation of proteins, employing Protein Purification Workstation, ÄKTA Explorer 100, and (8) a semi-large scale production of recombinant proteins in insect cells, using baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS), in shaker flask cell culture.
